Duncan Banner, The (OK) - Friday, March 19, 2021

Duncan native, Alan Joseph Galey, 64, was called home to heaven on January 17, 2021 after a year-long heart-related issue. He passed peacefully at his home in Albuquerque, NM, surrounded by those whom he loved most, his daughter Danielle Galey, son Matthew Galey, and precious granddaughter Savannah Galey, all of Albuquerque. He is survived by his parents, Joe H. Galey and Louise Freeman Galey, both of Duncan; brother Loran Galey and wife, Sheila Hamilton Galey, Bella Vista, AR; sister Susan Galey Christhilf and husband, Malcolm Christhilf, Springboro, PA; and by two nieces, a nephew, and numerous cousins and second-cousins on his maternal side.

Born December 22, 1956 at Lindley Hospital, Duncan, Alan spent his early-to-teen life in Duncan and is well-remembered by his peers for his warmth, kindness, humor, and free spirit. Friends recall his ready smile and carefree nature while growing up with him at Mark Twain Elementary and Duncan High School. He was also recognized for his musical talent (playing cornet and piano) and athletic skill (playing many sports while at DHS, but preferring football the most). Alan's love of football continued into adulthood as he was an avid fan of OU!

It was with Alan's second wife, Vicki Jo Garcia (now of Tucson, AZ), that he fell in love with the landscape of New Mexico. In Albuquerque, he worked many years in the art industry for Starline Printing Company and later for the Rio Rancho School System while raising his family among the beautiful desert scenery that he loved so much. Alan became a valued member of a newly-established Baptist church there, and -- in his joy and eagerness to spread the gospel -- began his "jail ministry," as he called it, at a penitentiary. Always at ease speaking with people from any walk of life, Alan comfortably spoke with the inmates and, as a result, brought souls to Jesus.

Upon his passing, Alan's children elected not to mourn his loss but to celebrate his life with a Memorial Celebration on January 31, 2021. Friends and family gathered to reminisce, eat his favorite foods, and listen to Alan's favorite music -- including the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun." This song provided the backdrop to a video montage of Alan's life and clearly displayed his sweet, joyful, and loving nature. Alan requested that his ashes eventually be scattered among his beloved Sandia Mountains in New Mexico.

While family and friends may feel that Alan left this life prematurely, one must acknowledge that he was happy and fulfilled in his life. Never one interested in wealth or prestige, Alan preferred the simple pleasures: Spending time with his family and supporting his children as they pursued their personal goals, connecting with old friends, and -- most importantly -- helping to raise the sunshine of his life, 7-year-old granddaughter, Savannah. No matter what he did or who he encountered, Alan was always ready to lend a compassionate ear, share a laugh, or simply radiate his happiness, warmth, and unencumbered spirit with all who would accept it. Here Comes the Sun, indeed.
