Dolores Marie (LaCross) Coutchie, 87, passed away Saturday evening, March 6, 2021 at Cascade Trails Assisted Living, Grand Rapids, MI with her family at her side. She received wonderful care from the Cascade Trails Staff with assistance from Kindred Hospice.
The daughter of the late Charles Joseph and Regina Rose (Witkowski) LaCross, she was born July 20, 1933 in Burton Township near Flint, MI. On December 1, 1951, she married the love of her life, Rollin Coutchie, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muskegon Heights. Together they enjoyed 67 blessed years of marriage and raised two children together; Bruce and Janet.
The family moved to Lake Leelanau, MI not long after her birth. She was surrounded by many relatives in the area. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School of Lake Leelanau with her siblings. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Muskegon, MI., where she finished her schooling. When she was 15, she swept Rollin off his feet and they enjoyed three fun years of courtship prior
to marriage.
After their wedding, they moved to Camp LeJeune, NC. Rollin proudly served as an MP in the Marine Corp for 2 years, where Dolores worked for the PX (Post Exchange) base store. In 1954, following his service, they moved to Flint, MI to work at General Motors. They built a home in Flint, where they had their children, before relocating to Flushing, MI in 1970. They faithfully attended St. Robert Catholic Church in Flushing. Her faith was very important to her.
Dolores worked at General Motors Fisher Guide Coldwater Road Plant in Flint for 37 years, at first as a Clerk in the Shipping Department and later as the Secretary for the Shipping & Traffic Manager. God gifted Dolores with many wonderful talents. She made friends easily and many friends became like family. She was very generous with her time and shared her talents with many friends and family. She always put family first. Her loving mother Regina, moved in with Rollin and Dolores after her dad’s passing. They made many memories with Regina as they traveled all over the country during their motorhome adventure trips. Dolores was a high energy person, always on the go, and rarely sat still. She was a hard worker and made the most of every day.
After Dolores’ retirement in 1991, they enjoyed traveling all over the country in their motorhome, reconnecting with friends wherever they went. She became a grandma for the first time in March 1992 and had 5 grandchildren by 1998. In 1999, Dolores and Rollin decided to settle down and winter in Fort Myers, FL at their new place in Cypress Woods RV Resort. They met several forever friends during their time there. Their children and grandchildren loved visiting them for some warmth in the winter months and made many lasting memories.
In 2003, they chose to move closer to their children for the beautiful Michigan summers. They bought a seasonal spot in Sandy Pines, Hopkins, MI to renovate. It was a family affair and everyone enjoyed making this the new gathering place for the family fun in West Michigan. They embraced their new little neighborhood and created many new lasting friendships and memories. They enjoyed daily coffee hours and group adventures with their neighbors. This little community was a very special blessing to them. One of Dolores’ biggest joys was spending quality time with her family and friends. She loved cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. She was known to have a kind, very generous heart, always welcoming with her smile. Her motto was the more the merrier; everyone was always welcome to join in the fun. She loved taking care of others. She made sure no one near her went hungry. She was a very generous host; not to mention a fantastic cook.
Over the years she enjoyed many activities with her family and friends; including camping with their motorhome; many consecutive years at Higgins Lake South State Park; boating and slalom water skiing behind their wooden Century Arabian boat, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, motorcycling on the off road trails, bicycling with the family, playing cards and board games. She was quite competitive, but always had fun with it. There are many “Dirty Dog” card game stories and Sequence and Rummikub games to remember her by. She created many memories with forever friend Jeannie Blower, in the 1939 Ford that Rolie put a big Buick Motor into. Her favorite story to tell about her “racing days”, was that she would race down Saginaw Street, but Rolie asked her not to let anyone lift the hood! Also, she cherished working on puzzles and luncheon adventures with her close friends, Carroll and Linda Aardema weekly.
She also had a few crafty talents. She sewed clothing for her entire family in their younger years. Later in life, she was known to always be working on cross stitch projects or making some special machine embroidery items for her kids and grandkids. Each grandchild was gifted a framed cross stitch birth announcement made by their grandma. Once she turned 82, she decided it was time to learn how to sew quilts for her grandchildren. Her talents on the sewing machine were amazing. She continued to sew 4 quilts right on thru the COVID-19 quarantine. She made a total of 12 quilts – 7 quilts for her grandchildren, 2 quilts for her nieces Barbara Weber and Betty Ritter, 1 quilt for dear friend Austen Eddy and 1 for her daughter Janet and 1 for herself.
Several family and friends always commented on how Rollin and Dolores had an amazing loving relationship that grew stronger over the years. They were best friends, always busy going here and there to visit family and friends. They were great, loving role models for many. Even in the later years when Rollin’s health was declining, Dolores demonstrated unconditional love. She was a
very brave, confident, strong and dedicated woman.
Dolores is survived by her loving children Bruce (Becky) Coutchie, Janet (Curtis) Lennerth, cherished grandchildren Caleigh (fiancé Raphael) Lennerth, Christina (James) Campbell, Kayla (Chris) Dohrmann, Cassidy Lennerth, Kyle (Danielle) Coutchie, Emily Paul, Kristi Coutchie and great grandson Cohen Wes Coutchie. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol LaCross. Dolores will be missed by many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dolores was preceded in death by her beloved husband Rollin Gene Coutchie in 2018, her brother Donald C. LaCross in 2009 and her sister Margaret Schopieray in 2014, and her sister-in-law Delores June Coutchie in 1944. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 14, 2021 at St. Robert Catholic Church, 310 N. Cherry Street, Flushing, MI 48433. Following the Mass, burial committal will take place at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum, 4142 Flushing Rd, Flint MI, 48504, with a
