He was born August 4, 1920, in Pittsburgh PA to F.W. and Emilie (Vetter) Hilf.
He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology.
In 1946 he was married to Virginia Taylor in Kalamazoo MI. She survives him. Also surviving are son John O. (Alberta) Hilf of Mount Lebanon PA, daughter Rev. Heidi (Rev. Frank) Vardeman of St. Paul MN, daughter-in-law Jane Stas Hilf of Cleveland OH and grandchildren Daniel Arthur Hilf, Jane Hilf Vardeman, Ann Hilf Vardeman, Nicholas Stas Hilf and William T. (Carrie) Hilf Jr.; sisters Winifred Eifert of Lebanon OH, Dorothy Sullivan of Mount Lebanon PA, Lois Jean Hilf of Finleyville PA and Anna Jane Doaks of Washington PA.
He was preceded in death by sister Catherine Croup and Louise Hilf and, in 2009, by his son, William T. Hilf.
A mechanical engineer, Dan worked for the Hays Corporation and for enterprises in Ohio and Wisconsin. He was adjunct faculty for the University of Wisconsin-Extension. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, National Association of Power Engineers and Instrument Society of America. He was a Green Bay Packer stockholder.
