h/o 1st Catherine YOUNG, 2nd widow Elizabeth (Allen) YOUNG relict of 1st wife's younger brother.
Birth: 5th of five known children in Massachusetts becoming Maine in 1820, later Cushing, Lincoln, now Knox county, Maine, owned 100 acres of land near Davis Point, a sea captian who died in Princeton, Dallas county, Arkansas.
Brought fourteen year old Armand CAZALLIS of France home to Maine in July 1827, with Armand living with George for awhile, naturalized 26 AUG 1835. George's son, Raymond Cazallis, was named for Armand's brother in France. His step-daughter, "Delia", married his son George N.

First wife was mother of their seven known children (four to adulthood), Catherine YOUNG (1804-1849), buried Davis cemetery, Knox county, Maine, second wife, widow of first wife's brother, Elizabeth ALLEN (1810-1888), married 1854, buried near mother Ann ALLEN and her 1st hubby, Capt YOUNG, in Burying cemetery, Knox county, Maine.

Captain George DAVIS, a sea captain, took sons, Byron and Raymond, around the world in 1849-1851 aboard newly built, 443 ton, S/V Hampton, laying over in San Francisco, California February 1850 (eight months prior to its statehood) during the Gold Rush days, read "Reminiscences of a Voyage Around the World", published 1869 by son, Raymond Cazallis DAVIS, and took Raymond's sister, Virginia, (C R Gray's mother) with step-sister, "Delia", to Germany aboard Bark Diana and while in Hamburg they saw Alexander II, Emperor of Russia, 22 June 1857.
Civil War: George's youngest son, Fred, was an officer in the Union army, wounded in a Florida battle ~ his daughter's husband, Oliver, an officer in the Confederate army, captured and held prisoner on Ship's Island, MS.
George Davis is found on 15 JUL 1870 Federal census of Cushing, Knox county, Maine as head of household, with 2nd wife and her three surviving children, HOWEVER ~ ~ also found on 23 JUN 1870 Federal census of Little Rock, Pulaski county, Arkansas where he was living in daughter Virginia's Little Rock, Arkansas home, moving to Princeton where he passed away in December.

Buried Christmas day by daughter Virginia, next to his grandson, Clyde Leslie GRAY, with a cenotaph at Davis cemetery, Cushing, Knox county, Maine shared with son Captain N Byron DAVIS (1832-1865), likely (?) erected by one or more of his three surviving children,.

His 2nd g,granddaughter, (my cohort) Wint (Gray) ("Howdie", Carl, Virginia) and husband Walt BONES of South Dakota, visited cemetery about 1993 finding stone broken. They left funds with the sexton for repairs, which seemingly were NOT done.

My New Hampshire cohort, his 3rd,grandchild, (via son Byron) engaged a firm that repaired stone (pictured at upper right) in late 2004, then had both stones cleaned, his and grandson's, Clyde Leslie GRAY.

Knox county was created 1 April 1860 from Lincoln county, which once had been Corwall pre-1760, ie: "...it was known as Sagadahoc Territory; and in 1665, the Duke of York (subsequently James II.), to whom it had been granted by the King, erected it into the County of Cornwall,— Jamestown, at Pemaquid, being the capital, and New Dartmouth (Newcastle), a shire town." ~ ~ ~ however its reported: "They may have claimed parts of today's Maine territory, but the court jurisdiction since 1653 was always York County, Commonwealth of ME, until they created new counties."

Source in part:
Carl Raymond Gray, sr's application, the prime organizer of Nebraska Society of Mayflower Descendants, serving as Chairman first fifteen years with State membership #1, son Maj-Gen Carl R Gray, a charter member of Minnesota's chapter serving as its second Chairman.
