Hazel was born in Doman, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Rufus W. Park, Sr. and Charlotte Elizabeth (Hines) Park Miller.

Hazel was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman “Dusty” Spear, four brothers, Thomas G. Park, Eddie W. Park, George S. Park, Sr., and Clarence E. Park; and one niece.

Hazel attended Chestnut Grove, Markwood, and Burch Grade Schools, graduating from Moorefield High School in Moorefield, WV.

In 1948 Hazel worked for the Blue Ridge Sanitorium, going into nurses training for six months at MacNeil Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, IL. She furthered her education by attending and graduating in 1949 from VA School of Practical Nursing (Leigh Memorial Hospital) in Norfolk, VA. Hazel then gained employment at Charles Town General Hospital in Ranson, WV where she remained until 1975. Immediately following, the new Jefferson Memorial Hospital was opened and Hazel participated in the move. She remained there until 1981 and then moved to Knott Nursing Home in Charles Town where she retired in 1990.

Hazel was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church, Bean Settlement, WV. . After moving to Charles Town, she became a member of the Charles Town Baptist Church.
