Silas was born on Feb. 17, 1875 to Barnet and Martha Fordyce of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. In the spring of 1884, he came with his parents to North Dakota, settling in Verner Township, Sargent county, where he lived until Dec. 28, 1897 when he bought the Van Cruningham farm in Jackson Township.

He married Nina Mary Dill, daughter of George and Eliza Dill, on Apr. 2, 1901. They became the parents of six sons; George, Archie, Richard, Carlton, Norman and Ira.

Silas and Nina were members of the Methodist church in Oakes, North Dakota.
