Janis was born on 4/1/27, in Butte, Montana, to Thomas Mackey and Evelyn B. Mackey. She had an older brother, Thomas Mackey and an older sister, Lois Mackey.
She grew up and attended school in Salmon, Idaho until the war effort interfered with her life in 1942. The family moved to Bremerton for work in PSNS. She then attended North Kitsap High School. Janis married Fred Lewis Walker, a 4 year POW survivor of the WWII, in 1946. They set up home in Bremerton where the Walker family and Mackey family resided. Fred and Janis had four children: Christine E. Morrison, Kathleen W. Hale, Barbara E. Rutherford and Fred T. Walker.
Janis loved talking and participating in politics along with her neighbors. Being involved with the political process was important to her. This interest was balanced by her interest in painting. She was self taught and had a natural talent. Her children proudly display her works in their homes.
Her faith in Jesus Christ was the rock of her life. She made sure all her children attended church with her, learning about Christianity and Jesus. She was instrumental in their faith.
Janis was loved deeply by her family and is survived by her sister Lois Phillips of Montevideo, Minn., her children: Chris and Greg Morrison, Kathleen and Mike Hale, Barbara and James Rutherford, Fred T. Walker, her grandchild Kyle M. Morrison and several nephews and nieces.
Janis is buried on the Lewis Funeral grounds close to her mother, Evelyn B. Mackey.
