Notes for Ivy May Chandler:
Burial in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, Riley Co., Ks. (from a letter written to Judy Wendt by Mildred Chandler, Dec. 1976) "Aunt Ivy Allen-She is poorly now. Better at times-Her daughter Nellie Westgate cares for her Mother--Aunt Ivy has cancer of the bladder....She hasn't been told this--nor did we tell Earl's Dad. She is 96 now-and most time her mind is very clear & sharp. But she is failing and so is Earl's dad. (from a letter written to Judy Wendt from Nellie Westgate, March 1977) "I ;have lived here with my mother (Ivy) since Oct 1958. She is 96 years old last Sept 23rd. Has been totally blind for past 4 or 5 years. Her sight gradually left. She has been bed fast since the 12th of Feb. We had her in the hospital from 12 Feb. til Mar 3 when the doctor said we could bring her home and do as much for her as they were doing over there. My sister & I took turns staying with her night and day." (from a letter to Judy Wendt from Nellie Westgate, April 28, 1977) "Mamma was in the hospital three weeks. We brought her home and she was here in bed five weeks, taking 24 hour care. My sisters were good help. One of my sisters, Jessie and I took turns staying with her all the time while she was at the hospital. She really didn't suffer any great pain. Because of her age 96, they couldn't give her the strong treatment it would take to stop the flow of blood caused by the cancerous tumors in her bladder. She passed quietly away at 11:30 a.m. Thursday April 7th...Since then we have been so busy trying to get things settled. There is lots to do yet. also to catch up on the things we had to let go for almost a year...I am not getting around very fast yet after breaking my ankle last July, ;then having my bunions removed in August..."One grandson from eacy of Ivy's children were the casket bearers. James Mallon; Ellsworth Westgate, James Judd, Wilmer Allen, Bobvby Creigfhton; Allen Inman; Henry Whitney II and Merlin Eddy.
