Dr. Richard Robert Shapard was named after the friends of his parants, Dr. Richard Rodgers Peebles. Dr. Peebles' wife was Mary Ann (Calvit) Peebles. Dr. Shapard's sister, Mary Catherine "Katie" Shapard was named after Mary Peebles.

Dr. R.R. Shapard, a pioneer physician of Anson, died at the Harris Sanitarium on Friday. Services were held in the Anson Methodist Church. Survived by his wife; two sons - Grundy Shapard and Brandon Shapard; two sisters. Dr. Shapard left with his wife to attend the State Medical Association meeting in Fort Worth the week before last, going by Wichita Falls to visit his son and family, expecting to go from there to Fort Worth, and then to Austin to visit his other son. He was stricken in Wichita Falls and taken to Fort Worth for an operation. Dr. Shapard was one of the old timers of Anson and was a leader in civic affairs since his arrival here many years ago. He circulated the petition for the incorporation of the Anson ISD in 1903 and served as a local trustee for many years. He was Mayor of Anson and campaigned for the Legislature. He was a director of First National Bank in Anson and chairman of the board of directors. Dr. Shapard retired from medicine in 1919 but was active in the affairs of a physician. He was a trustee in the Methodist Church and a Mason.
