Als ältester Sohn von Fürst Leopold IV. war Ernst Leopold bis zum Ende der Monarchie 1918 der letzte Thonfolger des Fürstentums Lippe.
1928 wurde er als erster Erbprinz eines deutschen Fürstenhauses Mitglied der NSDAP. Während der NS-Diktatur war er in der Buchhaltung der Deutschen Arbeitsfront tätig und später Adjutant des Landwirtschafsministers Walther Darré.
Im Nürnberger Prozess wurde er als Zeuge vernommen, er selbst wurde im Rahmen der Entnazifizierung als minderbelastet eingestuft.
Aufgrund ihrer Unterstützung für den Nationalsozialismus wurden er und seine beiden Brüder jedoch von Leopold IV. testamentarisch übergangen und sein Halbbruder Armin als künftiges Oberhaupt des Hauses Lippe bestimmt.

As the eldest son of Prince Leopold IV, Ernst Leopold was the last heir to the throne of the Principality of Lippe until the end of the monarchy in 1918.
In 1928, he became the first hereditary prince of a German princely house to join the NSDAP. During the Nazi dictatorship, he worked in the accounting department of the Deutsche
Labor Front and later as aide-de-camp to the Minister of Agriculture, Walther Darré.
He was questioned as a witness at the Nuremberg trial, and was himself classified as less incriminated in the denazification process.
However, due to their support for Nazism, he and his two brothers were passed over by Leopold IV in his will while his half-brother Armin was designated as the future head of the House of Lippe.
