Owned the Muskegon Booming Company, Ryerson & Johnson Sawmill (Muskegon), North Side Planing Mill Co., and the Ryerson & Johnson Lumberyard (Chicago). He began work in the lumber business in Muskegon, Michigan around 1856 (as a tallyman) and remained there until the late 1860s, and then moved to Chicago (his companies were in both locations). He and Peter Johnson owned a steam mill in Muskegon and then sold it to and became partners with Esau Tarrant & Co. Ryerson & Johnson then opened a lumber yard in Chicago with the agreement that lumber from the Tarrant mill would be sent to Chicago. When Tunis died in July 1871, Johnson continued the business as Ryerson & Johnson. The Great Fire of Chicago in October 1871 destroyed the merchandise.

Tunis and Rose Anderson were married in 1862. The apopted Grace Esther in 1868.
