Elizabeth Ruth “Ruthie” Hardee Sarvis was born about 1825 in Horry County, South Carolina. Who were her parents? Was Thomas L. Hardee her father? She married Confederate veteran John Reynolds Sarvis, and the couple had eleven children: Thomas Lester Sarvis, William Scarborough Sarvis, Edward "Ned" Charles Sarvis, Helan Sarvis King, Sharlotte Ada Sarvis Neely, Rhoda Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Sarvis Cartrette, Dock Joseph “Puss” Sarvis, James Scarborough Sarvis, George Marsden Sarvis (killed in a sawmill fire), Eahmon A. Sarvis (killed in a sawmill fire), and Bowden Sarvis (killed in a sawmill fire). (Some have misidentified Elizabeth Rebecca Ann “Lizzie” Prince as John’s wife, but fellow Sarvis descendant and my fourth cousin, Johnny Otto Sarvis, Jr., presents strong evidence that John’s wife was Elizabeth Ruth “Ruthie” Hardee Sarvis.)

Like her husband Ruth was of English and French Huguenot descent.

Ruth and John donated the land upon which sits the Pleasant Meadow Baptist Church and Cemetery. Ruth died at about age 75 about 1900 in Horry County and is probably buried alongside her husband in an unmarked grave at Pleasant Meadow.

I hope one of Ruth’s descendants will add her photo to this site. Thanks so much to Sarvis family researchers, especially Johnny Otto Sarvis, Jr. and Wanda V., for so much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions.
