BENNETT, Donald C.

Don Bennett, born February 7, 1938 and died on May 26, 2017 at home after a short battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife Orienne, son Barry of Rollinsville, CO, and his brother Bob (Pat) of Gering, NE. Don was raised on a farm in the North Platte Valley in Western Nebraska. He attended a rural community school until the 10th grade, then transferred to Scottsbluff High School where he was editor of the school newspaper which received an award from the Omaha World Herald as the best school newspaper in Nebraska. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy where he went to journalism school and served with the submarine force at the dawn of the nuclear submarines. He then attended the University of Nebraska, graduating with a degree in journalism. Following college, he moved to California and began working at J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency, eventually becoming Director of the Public Relations Department in San Francisco. Don moved to Petaluma in 1967 and instantly became involved in the community, serving on the Old Adobe School Board for four years and co-founding the Valley Little League. He directed the successful campaign to get the ballot issue passed to build Petaluma Valley Hospital. He was involved in the Petaluma Growth Control Plan and was chair for one year. For five years he was on the Residential Development Evaluation Board on a subcommittee for Parks and Rec, working to get Lucchesi Park developed. He was District Representative for two state assembly people: Michael Wornum in the 1970s and Vivien Bronshvag in the 1980s. In 1989, he formed North Country Communications, an advertising, P.R. and graphics firm. For two years he published a community newspaper, the North Country Journal. For the last 20 years as Don Bennett and Associates, his major clients have been the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce and Sonoma County Economic Development Board. Don was on the Petaluma Planning Commission for a total of 12 years and on the Sonoma County Planning Commission for 12+ years. He was a long-time member of the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce and past president. He was a member of Kiwanis and served on the PEP Board of Directors. Don had many passions in life, including travel (50 countries and 49 states), single malt scotch, fine wine, playing poker and old movies. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, 850 Keokuk St., Petaluma. Donations may be made to Hospice of Petaluma, PEP or Kiwanis Foundation.
