Hiram Dexter "H.D." aka "Deck" Cowles was born in Harrison,Arkansas to John Hudson Cowles and Margaret Leuretta "Maggie" Smith. He married Nancy Elizabeth Liles in Arkansas, when she was 13 and he was 18. They had 13 children together; Lola Estella "Stella" Stroud, Ella May Hixson, John Hudson, Florence Ethel Raley, Idabell Marie Springer, Maggie Elizabeth, Joseph Carroll, Harry Eddy, Verly Edna, Effie Louretta Stevens, Clarence Ernie and 2 stillborn children. After Nancy's death, he married her widowed sister, Gertie Liles Hixson; she had 4 stepchildren and 12 children of her own and they had 1 son together. The infant died and Gertie died 4 months later. He married Louise Busby Baker, widowed cousin of Nancy and Gertie and mother of 8 children. They lived in Tahlequah. Sometime after her death in 1958, he moved near Enid,Ok and lived with his youngest daughter, Effie. He died in Enid,OK. He was a farmer and carpenter all of his life and an amazing storyteller. His other 3 children not mentioned in the list below are buried as follows; John Hudson Cowles,Sr. is buried in Haskell Cem., Haskell,Muskogee Co.,OK; Florence Cowles Raley is buried in Citizens Cem. in Fort Gibson,Muskogee Co,OK and Joseph Carroll Cowles is buried in Pine Grove Cem., Hood River,Oregon.
