The Home Weekly, Alma, Kansas, Thursday, Nov. 24, 1881, page 3:
Soon after we went to press with our paper last week, word was brought to us that a man has been found dead in the road two miles north of this place. A number of our citizens together with Esqr. Zwanziger, who acted as coroner in the absence of Mr. Brown, went out to the scene of the accident. They found the corpse to be that of J.C. Banta of Maple Hill. An inquest was held which resulted in a verdict of death by falling from a wagon. The body was brought to the Court House and word was sent to the afflicted family, which consists of wife and , we think, seven children.

The body was encased in a neat coffin and the next day taken to his late home, now made desolate by the sudden and unexpected death of a dearly beloved husband and father.

The facts appear to be, as near as we can learn, about as follows: Mr. Banta left Alma for home on a load of lumber about 11 o'clock A.M. seemingly as well as usual. Where he fell off, the ground is level. No one saw him fall nor can we learn that he was seen by any one after he left town. As to the cause of his death, there are various conjectures. Some think it was caused by heart disease, while others think it might have been a fainting fit. But, whatever the cause, death must have been instantaneous as the fall broke his neck. We sympathize with his family in this their great loss.
