Lucy Bernard was the elder daughter of Colonel William Bernard and his wife, Lucy (Higginson) Bernard. Her mother had a prior marriage to Lewis Burwell by which she had a son, Lewis Burwell II. Lucy Bernard; her sister, Elizabeth; and a brother, George Bernard, were raised in Gloucester County, Virginia on Fairfield Plantation, the property of their mother's first husband, which their father helped to administer.

Lucy Bernard was married to Dr. Edmund Gwyn by whom she had a son and a daughter, Lucy Gwyn, who married Thomas Reade. Following the death of Dr. Edmund Gwyn, his widow, Lucy (Bernard) Gwyn, married Edward Creffield, Jr., a merchant, and they left Virginia, settling in London.

Edward Creffield, Jr., "now of London," left a will, dated 24 Nov 1694, proved 9 Dec 1694, in which he left a bequest to "my Daughter in Lawe [i.e., step-daughter] Mrs. Lucy now or late wife of Mr. Thomas Reed of the County of Gloucester in Virginia one Diamond Ring which my late wife (Mother of said Lucye) used to weare, one Gold Necklace consisting of six chains Fastened to a locket of Massey gold, also..." (Will of Edward Creffield, Junior. The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 19 (1911), pages 289-290).

Please note this lady has a great deal of inaccurate information regarding her life posted online. She is widely stated to have died November 6, 1675, but this is the documented date of death of her mother, Lucy (Higginson) Burwell Bernard Ludwell, whose tombstone is preserved at Abingdon Episcopal Church Cemetery in White Marsh, Gloucester County, Virginia.

She is often given the inaccurate birth date approximation of 1650, or even earlier, at a time when her mother was either married to her first husband, Lewis Burwell, or not even married at all.

Additionally, many researchers completely ignore the fact she had a second marriage to Edward Creffield, Jr. and left the colony of Virginia, settling in England, in the city of London.
