David Peter DeSantis passed away on February 27, 2021 of natural causes at his home in Patterson, NY. David was the only son of Joseph V. DeSantis and his first wife, Miriam Moss. He was raised in New York City and Patterson, NY. Attended Little Red Schoolhouse in New York City and Carmel High School where he received a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Harpur College in 1964, and subsequently completed a PhD degree in mathematics and physics at Columbia University at a historically young age. David was a retired teacher who taught math and physics at the Dalton School in New York from 1978 - 1992; he was loved and appreciated by his students and was fondly referred to as "Doc."

David was unquestionably an eccentric soul. To liken him in intellect and "quirks" to John Nash would not be inappropriate. His intense intellect made it challenging for him to relate to others socially, but he had a sincere and caring heart. In addition to physics and mathematics, David was interested in all things political, historical, social, economic, and educational - among many, many others, and took strong progressive positions toward the development of American society throughout his life. He was loved and will be deeply missed by many, but we take comfort in knowing that his many challenges are now behind him.

David's remains will be ensconced in a niche at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, NY, where his mother and grandparents are also interred; a private memorial gathering will take place for family members in New York once Covid restrictions have eased enough for people to travel.
