COADY, Bernard (Bernie), P. Eng. September 26, 1933 - August 29, 2010 Bernie was born and raised in Cardston, AB and attended the Colorado School of Mines, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering. In 1957, he married Theresa (nee Violini) and during their fifty-three years of marriage she was his tower of strength, supporting him and the family during the development of his career and business as well as during the period of his failing health. He started his engineering career in Calgary as a process engineer with Shell Canada Ltd. and then followed with Petrofina Canada. In 1966, Bernie founded Delta Projects Ltd., the first Calgary headquartered company to provide engineering, procurement and construction services to the hydrocarbon processing industry in Western Canada. Delta Projects Ltd. expanded and became Delta Catalytic Corporation where Bernie was Chairman and CEO for ten years with operations throughout Canada and internationally. Bernie retired in 1997 having participated directly in the development of the Canadian natural gas processing, petrochemical and heavy oil recovery industries during his forty-three years in engineering and construction. In 1988, Bernie was recognized by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta with the Centennial Award, the Association's highest honor and with the Pinnacle Award for outstanding business leadership in Calgary. He was also honored by the Colorado School of Mines in 1993 with their Distinguished Achievement Medal. In 2010 the Gas Processing Association Canada awarded him with its Outstanding Achievement Award. In his retirement, Bernie volunteered his expertise as Chairman of Science Alberta Foundation (1998 to 2003), Director of Calgary Technologies Inc. (2003 to 2007) and was on the Board of St. Mary's University College. Beyond these and many more significant career accomplishments, Bernie was an inspirational philanthropist and had a magnificent passion for life. He generously shared his love for the arts, culture, history, politics, horticulture, travel, and sports with anyone who would listen. It was hard to be untouched by his contagious enthusiasm. Of course, those he impacted immeasurably, and the part of his life that gave him the most pride, was his family. Bernie is survived by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Theresa; his sons, Michael (Holly) of Denver and Gregory (Eileen) of Calgary; his daughter, Danette Coady (Americo Gomez) of Calgary; as well as ten grandchildren, Aaron, Sean and Kristin Coady of Denver, Liam, Shannon, Colleen, Breanne, and Tara Coady and Andre and Quinn Gomez all of Calgary. Bernie is also survived by his sisters Catherine Crighton of Lethbridge, Doris Durrell of Medicine Hat and Joan Irwin of Delaware; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Violini of Calgary and a large extended family that he embraced as his own. Theresa and their children and grandchildren will share memories of traveling the world, family ski trips, golfing, camping and fishing trips with Grandpa. His countless friends and colleagues will continue to live through the doors he opened.
