"Life is Good" "Family, friends, and co- workers will remember him for his upbeat spirit, sharp wit, and passion for genealogy, his mischief and quiet generosity.
John was born in Fairbanks on Dec 30, 1953 to Truman and Dorothy Mccartney, where his father worked at Eielson Air Force Base. The family moved to Bermuda, then to Tripoli, Libya where they lived until the Six-Day War in 1967. The family next called Mountain Home, Idaho, home until his father's retirement when they moved to Bellingham, Washington.

John attended Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon, where he was on the Dean's list every quarter. He next enrolled in Western Washington University in Bellingham, where he earned a degree in journalism.

Following college he worked in public relations for St. Joseph and St. Luke's hospitals, saving money for a bicycle tour of Europe. In 1981 he volunteered on kibbutz Kfar Giladi.

Back in the United States, he bought a motorcycle and headed south to Houston. The bike broke down in Odessa, Texas where he worked as a short-order cook until landing a job at the Odessa American. From health reporter he moved to the news desk where he found a home and a career. In 1984 he took a job at the Billings Gazette in Montana to be closer to his family.

Jacqueline Toller and John married on 30 Sep 1985. In 1988 they moved to Port Angeles, Washington when John got a job as news desk chief at the Peninsula Daily News. In 1997 he took a job at the Bellingham Herald, and then in 1998, as national and world editor at The Daily Herald in Everett.

John's life ended as he suffered a second stroke while walking to the store."
