Elder William Marsdon Benton, Sr. 87 of Leland, died Thursday, February 25, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Mr. Benton was born in Brunswick County on March 10, 1933 and was son of the late Ellis and Lottie Mintz Benton. He was a member of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church of Hickman’s Crossroads. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox of Wilmington and was also founder of East Carolina Sweeping & Maintenance of Leland in 1989. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mazelle Ludlum Benton; three sons, William Benton, Jr. and wife Tina of Rocky Point, Kenny Benton and wife Judy of Castle Hayne, Jesse Benton and wife Kerrie of Delco; sister, Julia Lee and husband Danny, of Ash; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church at three o’clock in the afternoon with Elder Michael Gowens officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jesse Benton, Kenny Benton, Justin Benton, Steven Harris, Daniel Clifton, Justin Clifton. Honorary Pallbearers will be William Benton, Jr., Austin Benton, Baylor Harris. The family will receive friends at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church one hour prior to the service.
