She was born June 10, 1927, in Homestead Township, rural New York Mills, the daughter of William and Lillian (Siers) Ahlers. She grew up in New York Mills and graduated from New York Mills High School in 1945. After high school she worked at the bakery in New York Mills and then JC Penney in Wadena. She moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Munsingwear until the end of World War II. She married Arlie Robert Niemala Dec. 28, 1947, in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New York Mills. The couple lived in Minneapolis and then moved to Fergus Falls for two years. They moved to New York Mills and in 1960 to Willmar where she worked as a secretary for Congressman Alec Olson. From 1963 to 1966, she worked at Palm Sales Industries in Litchfield where she was a switchboard operator and secretary. From 1971 to 1972, she was employed at the Rice Memorial Hospital and the Christian Nursing Center in Willmar. She also worked at the Garfield Elementary School in Willmar from 1969 to 1971. She moved to Maple Lake for a short time before moving to St. Cloud in 1972. In St. Cloud, she worked for Herbergers and also started her own business called YOU Singles. She completed a home health aide/homemaker program on Feb. 1, 1979, from the St. Cloud Public School and also completed her nursing assistant in long term care on April 30, 1979. She also took courses from the St. Cloud Area Vo-Tech Institute during 1980 and 1981. She moved to West St. Paul where she continued to own and operate YOU Singles and in 1994, she retired to Golden Valley.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald Niemala, Grand Rapids, and Robert Niemala, Cottage Grove; a sister, Lillian Hopponen, Golden Valley; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband,Arlie on Dec. 17, 1978, a brother, Willard Ahlers, two sisters, Florence Ahlers and Evelyn Peterson, and a grandson, Nicholas Niemala.

Funeral: Wednesday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, New York Mills, with the Rev. John Krueger officiating.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, New York Mills.
