Actress. She was best known for appearing in the late 1940s and early 1950s films "Daisy Kenyon" and "In a Lonely Place" opposite Joan Crawford and Humphrey Bogart. Born Martha Ruth Stewart Haworth, her family relocated to Brooklyn, New York, when she was young. She graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn in 1939. She later sang on NBC radio programs and with bandleaders Glenn Miller, Harry James and Claude Thornhill. An engagement at the famed Stork Club in Manhattan brought her to the attention of a Hollywood talent scout. She signed with Fox studio and in 1945, made her big-screen debut opposite Vivian Blaine in the musical comedy "Doll Face." In the film, she performed a spunky duet with Perry Como. Later she starred opposite Richard Crane in "Johnny Comes Flying Home" (1946) and with June Haver in "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now." (1947) Her later film credits included "Are You With It?," (1948) "Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick," (1952) "Convicted," (1950) and "Surf Party." (1964). She also appeared in television on such series as "Our Man Higgins," "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," and "My Three Sons." Besides film and television, she also graced the theatrical stage in several productions.
