William was born in Davidson County and resided in Davidson County as a farmer prior to enlisting in Company G (The Chatham Light Linfantry), 48th North Carolina Infantry on August 14, 1862 at the age of 33. He was wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862 and was sent home because of his wound. Company records for May 1863 state that he was "at home trying to die". He was paroled at Salisbury, North Carolina on May 20, 1865.
