THOMAS ALTHOFF, 54, of Nutley, the son of Peggy and Jack Althoff of TOMS RIVER, died on a motorcycle when an individual driving a Jeep Cherokee ran a red light on Route 17. Thomas was a graduate of Nutley High School and an avid ham radio operator, learning Morse code at the age of 11, then shortly after he obtained his first license, then going on to a commercial license. He was a life member of ABEL American Radio Relay League. His call sign was K2TA. He was also a life member of the New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Ciub. He was employed at ABC TV as a senior staff engineer in New York City for the past 30 years and was on his way home from work at the time of the accident. Tom had quite a gift and love for fixing things, and used that gift to help others.

He leaves other family members; his wife, Jeannie; and her two daughters, Caitlin and Lindsey; his sisters, Laura Althoff and Judy Casper; and a brother, John Althoff; as well as their spouses and and nine nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at The Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Toms River. Burial will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.
