Garret Burkett was born March 22, 1842 and died August 29, 1924 aged 82 years, 5 months and 7 days. He was married to Amela Falbush on March 9, 1862 and to this union were born 8 children, seven of whom are still living, his companion and one daughter passing on before.
Those surviving are James, William and George Burkett of Marshall, Emma Blunk of Martinsville, Vina Blunk of Chicago, Mary Norris of Elnora, Ind., and Elisha Burkett of Joplin, MO.
He was a union soldier during the last two years of the Civil War. But best of all he has been a soldier for Jesus for 60 years. He was among the oldest members of the Centenary U. B. Church.
Funeral services were held at the Marshall United Brethren church conducted by Rev. Ardie Groves.

Garrett Burkett was born March 22, 1842, in Armstrong County, Penn.; as a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch sect, he came to Clark County at the age of 18 and settled near the Clark Center area.
He married Amelia Falbusch on March 9, 1862. She was born in Clark County on July 16, 1840, as the only one of her family to be born in America; her brothers and sisters had emigrated with their parents to America from Germany prior to 1840.
To the union of Garrett and Amelia Burkett were born seven children. They all grew to adulthood and were James, William, George, Elisha, Mary, Emma, and Vina. Garrett Burkett died Aug. 29, 1924; his wife Amelia died April 10, 1922.
Garrett Burkett served in the Union Army during the Civil War. A photo taken during the winter of 1863 shows him in his uniform. The original photograph is in the possession of a granddaughter, Lillie Wilhoit of Martinsville.
James Burkett, the oldest child, was born Nov. 25, 1862. He grew to adulthood in the Clark Center area and on March 18, 1888, married Lydia May Coons, daughter of John Martin Coons, who operated the country store and post office at Clark Center for many years. To the union were born nine children; seven lived to adulthood, Charles, Clarence, Ada, Joseph, Alfa, Lillie, and Marie.
Clarence Burkett served in World War I, and died in France on Oct. 3, 1918. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Marie Burkett died on Nov. 1, 1946.
