Bessie Amelia Burch was the daughter of Franklin and Mary Ann (Shuler/Schuler) Burch. She married Charles Jacob Cantonwine August 14, 1895, in Boulder county, CO. Charles was the son of Abraham and Elizabeth (White) Cantonwine. Her grandfather was Charles Cantonwine. Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

Charles and Bessie had four children: Josephine (b. 1896), Claude Burch (b. 1898), Leona B., (b. 1900) and Nellie (b. 1903). The three older children were all born in Longmont, Boulder Co., CO. Nellie was born in Covina, CA.

Charles and Bessie divorced some time after Nellie's birth. On Sept. 8, 1913, in Vigo, Indiana, Bessie married Samuel A. Skelton, a widower whose wife Belle had died recently leaving him with four sons to raise: James, Carl, Lee, and Nick. Samuel and Bessie then had two children of their own, Mary and Samuel. Some time between 1920 and 1930, Samuel and Bessie divorced (1930 census shows Bessie as divorced with two children, Mary and Samuel).

Samuel died March 16, 1939 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Putnam Co., IN, where his first wife Belle is also buried.
