Fatal Accident -
Larson Peterson Struck By a Train At Arlington -

Arlington was the scene of an accident Monday which resulted in the death of Larson Peterson, a well-known ranchman living near Ordway.

Mr. Peterson was at Arlington trading on Monday afternoon and about six o'clock in the evening started for Galatea. He drove along parallel with the railroad track for a short distance before coming to the crossing and it is supposed did not see or hear the freight train which was approaching from behind until he was fairly on the track and the engine struck his wagon, throwing the wagon and contents some distance to one side. The train was running about 12 miles an hour and was brought to a stop as soon as possible, not however, soon enough to avoid the terrible accident.

Parties who witnessed the accident rushed to the scene but were too late to be of aid to the unfortunate man as he was found dead. County coroner Moerke summoned a jury and it was shown that Peterson came to his death as a result of carelessness on his own part.

A peculiar part of the accident is the fact that two little calves which were in the wagon bed at the time of the accident were entirely unharmed.

Mr. Peterson was a single man about 35 years of age and has relatives living at Ordway. The remains were taken to Rocky Ford for burial.

From the Rocky Ford Tribune, Friday May 9, 1902:

Lars Petersen, a young man living at Arlington, was killed by a train at that place last Monday. A high wind was prevailing and in trying to cross the track with a team and wagon, he failed to hear an on-coming train which struck the wagon, throwing him to the ground with such force as to break his neck and killing him instantly, the team and wagon escaping injury.

The funeral took place at the undertaking parlors of the Dawley Hardware & Furniture Co. Thursday afternoon and the remains laid to rest in the Rocky Ford cemetery.
