Beloved daughter of Washington Smith Gilliam and Esther Aldrich Taylor. Nellie was the second wife of Jesse Newberry Day, founder of Dayton, Washington. Nellie was a graduate of the State Normal School in Salem, Oregon. She taught at Whitman College from 1883 to 1886, when she was elected Superintendent of Public Schools for Walla Walla County. Nellie also served as the Society Editor for the Evening Bulletin.
