James Lewis LaClare’s obituary was published in The Morning Herald on July 25th, 1907; he passed away on July 23rd as the obituary reads:

“James Lewis LaClare died at his residence in West Masontown at 1:00 pm Tuesday. Mr. LaClare was one of the foremost citizens of this section of the county and his loss is mourned by a wide circle of friends. Deceased was born January 17, 1854 and married Miss Ely McCann 24 years ago. He is survived by his widow and eight children as follows: Leslie L., of Uniontown; Mrs. Sarah Hall, of Coal Center; John W., Orville L., James L., George R., Earl E., and Lena M. Deceased also has three brothers and four sisters viz; Jack (John) LaClare of Uniontown; Joseph, deceased; Amadee of Nicholson Township; Agnes Clark, Caroline Franks, Eliza Coldren and Mrs. (Mary Rose) Abraham Hendershot.

The funeral will move from the late residence at 10 o’clock this morning to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased was a member, and services conducted by Rev. T. M. Hartman, after which internment will take place in the Ross cemetery (part of Masontown Cemetery). Mr. LaClare was known as a man of strong conviction and always reserved the right to mold his opinions from a careful study of the matter to be decided upon.”

Additional Note: The Ross Cemetery was outside of Masontown in Gray's Landing. In the early 1900's, when a coke plant and railroad tracks were being built in Gray's Landing, the remains of the Rosses were removed from the McClain graveyard, adjoining the Ross farm, and reinterred in a section of the Masontown Cemetery known as the "Ross Cemetery." It was called this because that portion of the Masontown Cemetery once was part of the John Ross Farm in Masontown, inherited from Robert Ross. The ground was sold for a cemetery by the owner, John Ross.
