James C Combs was the son and only child to survive to adulthood of Charles Allen Combs (1811-1880) and Rebecca Traylor Combs (1815-1847). Per family records James was born on 30 Sep 1841 in either Mississippi or Tennessee and died 3 July 1862 at the General Hospital Macon Mississippi after Shiloh (refer Confederate Archive, Chapter 1 File no. 27 Page 28). James enlisted in the Louisiana 16th Infantry Company G and was mustered in the Confederate armed forces on September 1861. This was a Rapides Louisiana regiment where he was living with his father.
