Robert L. "Bob" Schoenberger, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 4, 2021. He was born in Toledo on January 29, 1926, to Arthur and Edith (Schirack) Schoenberger. Bob grew up in Perrysburg, attending St. Rose Elementary and Perrysburg High School. He served in the US Army Air Corps and was able to go to college on the GI Bill. Bob attended OSU and graduated from Bowling Green with a degree in industrial engineering. He was a member of the fraternity Lambda Chi Alpha.

As an industrial equipment salesman, Bob found his first success at the Crane Co. then moved on to Mason Equipment Co. of Toledo, which he purchased and relocated to Maumee under the new name, Energy Control. Bob spent many years growing his business into a successful enterprise that is ongoing.

On April 10, 1954, Bob married Joan (Joanie) Meloy Schoenberger of Perrysburg. Together, they enjoyed many years of family life in Perrysburg raising their two boys. They were also avid tennis players at Belmont Country Club. Many ski trips to various places out west and Europe provided wonderful memories.

Bob's family would describe him as optimistic, pragmatic, wise, curious about the next generations, hardy, adventurous, and fun-loving. He was gracefully stoic with a mix of his own brand of cosmic clowning. He was an engaged, life-long learner.

Preceding Bob in death were his parents and the love of his life, Joanie. Also preceding were his sisters, Vivian (Ray) Grimes and Donna (Dick) Forbes. He is survived by his sons, Bruce (Karen) and Jeff (Vivian) as well as four grandchildren: Scott, Nikki, Grace, and Van. Also surviving are niece, Karen (Phil) Barnes and nephew, Ron (Becky) Visser, all of Perrysburg.

Services were private. Arrangements were handled by Witzler Shank Walker Funeral Home, Perrysburg, and online condolences can be left at walkerfuneralhomes.com.

Memorials may be made to Rocky Mountain Conservancy; 48 Alpine Circle, Estes Park, CO 80517 or Lake Erie Foundation; 236 Walnut Ave., Lakeside, OH 43440.

(News story) Robert L. "Bob" Schoenberger, a Maumee business owner who was an Army Air Corps veteran of the World War II era, died Thursday at his Perrysburg home. He was 95.

He died of apparent heart failure, his older son Bruce said.

Mr. Schoenberger owned and operated Energy Control Inc., a supplier of boiler and burner systems on Illinois Avenue in Maumee for 27 years from 1970, when he bought the business, until 1997, when he retired and sold it to his younger son, Jeff, who then expanded the company and moved it to Perrysburg and Cleveland.

During the same time period, he advised other companies, helping them pick the right boilers for installation at large industrial, commercial, and public buildings across northwest Ohio. Those sites included some of downtown Toledo's most prominent structures such as One Sea- Gate and the Nicholas Building.

He was very proud of that part of his work, Bruce Schoenberger said.

"He was a handy guy and very industrious," he said. "He would actually climb into those huge boilers and would make friends with boiler operators who would then help him get another sale. ... They called him Boiler Bob."

Before that, Robert Schoenberger was a plumbing-supplies salesman at different times for the Toledo office of Crane Co. and Toledo's former Mason Equipment Co., which became Energy Control when he bought it.

Born Jan. 29, 1926, in Toledo to Edith and Arthur Schoenberger, Mr. Schoenberger graduated from Perrysburg High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps with designs on becoming a pilot. He served stateside after completing his pilot training until his honorable discharge about four years later.

He then used his GI Bill to attend Ohio State University for two years and then Bowling Green State University, graduating in the early 1950s with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering.

In his spare time, he enjoyed playing tennis, skiing, sailing, and traveling with his wife. A "lifelong learner," Mr. Schoenberger also liked to read history books, his son said.

Mr. Schoenberger was a former member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Perrysburg. Other memberships included the Belmont Country Club, and the Catwaba Island Club.

His wife of 60 years, the former Joan Meloy, died in 2014.

Surviving are his sons, Bruce and Jeff, and four grandchildren.

Services were private. Arrangements were by Witzler Shank Walker Funeral Home.

The family suggests tributes to Rocky Mountain Conservancy, Estes Park, Colo.; or Lake Erie Foundation, Lakeside, Ohio.
