OBITUARY:
The Athens Reporter, Tue, Oct 13, 1891 - Chantry -- Another old landmark passed quietly away last Sunday morning, in the person of Mr. H. A. Alford. The aged gentleman had been failing for some time but was confined to his room but a few days. Mr. Alford was born near this place in Jan. 1807, his people coming from the State of Connecticut. In Feb. 1820, he was united in marriage with Sally Day. Eleven children were the fruits of this union, six of whom passed over the river before him, the five surviving are Mrs. J. Sheldon, Mrs. A. J. Copeland, Mr. J. Alford, Mrs. W. M. Prather, of Kansas City, and Miss Julia Alford. After fifty-five years of happy married life death took his aged partner (May 1884). His children were all with him when he passed away, excepting Mrs. Prather. His remains were interred in the family burying ground Monday afternoon, the grandsons acting as bearers. The sermon was preached at Harlem by Rev. Perley, from Eccles. 8 chapter and 11 verse. Mr. Alford was a consistent member of that Methodist church for over half a century. In politics he was a staunch Reformer.
