EDWARDSBURG, MI - Douglas Earl Van Kirk, 62, of Edwardsburg, MI (formerly of Mishawaka, IN) passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021 as a result of a single automobile accident.

He was born on May 2, 1958 to the late Earl Leroy and Inez (Hickey) Van Kirk in Elkhart, IN, and had lived in Edwardsburg, MI for the past seven months, coming from Mishawaka, IN.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, David Van Kirk; and his mother-in-law, Joan (Smith) Wilkinson.

Douglas graduated in 1976 from Elkhart Memorial High School before serving in the U.S. Army from 1977-1982. He then studied nursing at IUSB, where he received his BSN degree.

Doug retired from Elkhart General Hospital, where he worked as a Registered Nurse for 32 years. He then worked part-time as a Nurse at Golden Living Center in Mishawaka, IN for the last two years.

On July 25, 2015, he married Joe Wilkinson in Mishawaka, IN.

Doug is survived by his husband, Joe (Wilkinson) Van Kirk of Edwardsburg, MI; his son, Kollin Brugh of Mishawaka, IN; one grandson, Ethan Penland; two sisters, Deborah (Ronald) Jackson of Elkhart, IN and Darlene (Eric) Eads of Constantine, MI; one brother, Daniel (Narda) Van Kirk of San Juan, Puerto Rico; a sister-in-law, Laurie Potterbaum; father-in-law, James Wilkinson; other in-laws, Cathy (Paul) Whalen, Jerry (Connie) Wilkinson, Brenda Wilkinson, Terry Wilkinson, and Tanya Wilkinson; many nieces & nephews; and his beloved dog, Chase.

Doug was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church in South Bend, IN and the CHC Club in Chicago, IL. He was an Ordained Minister who married several couples. Doug was a five-star nurse, who spoke on the topic of Pain Management at the International Medical Convention in Washington, D.C.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2021 and from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2021, both at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2021 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN, with Pastor Scott Bowie officiating. Burial will follow in New Carlisle Cemetery.
