US Congressman. The son of US Congressman Lewis Dewart, he was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced law practice in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. He was Chief Burgess of Sunbury in 1845 and a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1852, 1856, 1860 and 1884. In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. A unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed law practice until his death.
