Jim was born September 18, 1924 near Redfield to John and Mary (Grunsky) Lutter.
He married Loretta Stemper in Zell on October 28, 1948. They farmed in the Redfield area for many years. He also worked at Dakota Hatchery and Mill and South Dakota Developmental Center.
He enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Jim was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
Jim is survived by four daughters: Linda (Mike Beck) Kruthoff of Watertown, SD; Peggy (Lonnie) Phillips of Greenville, TX; Mary (Marv) Mullaney of Crete, NE; and Betty (Bill) Krikac of Clark, SD; and one son James (Carla) Lutter of Fresno, CA. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two sisters: Ramona Rehfeld of Aberdeen, SD; and Virginia Perry of Sequim, WA; his sister-in-law Nellie Lutter of Redfield and a special caregiver RubiAnn Fisher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Loretta in 1995, two brothers: John and Don, three sisters: Mary Feldsein, Rose Rausch and Margaret Neilsen and two grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, October 13, 2007 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Roger Geditz will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
