DEATH OF SIR J. T. FIRBANK
A POPULAR AND GENIAL MAN
"BREAD AND BUTTER POLITICS"
We regret to announce the death of Sir J. T. Firbank, formerly Unionist M.P. for East Hull, which took place yesterday at Tunbridge Wells from heart failure. Sir Thomas was born in 1850, and was consequently 60 years of age. He was the son of the late Mr. Joseph Firbank, J.P., D.L., Monmouthsire, who was at one time reputed to be one of the largest single railway contractors in the world. He married the daughter of the late Rev. J.P. Garrett, of Kilgarron and Kellistown, Carlow, Ireland, and had two (three) sons and one daughter. Deceased was educated at Cheltenham College, and was himself like his father, J.P. and D.L., and was also J.P. for the county of Kent. Sir Thomas served as High Sheriff of Monmouthshire in 1891.
A GENIAL MAN
Probably Sir Thomas would never have claimed to be a master hand at politics, but he possessed qualities which went far to make him a favourite in a constituency. His views were sound, however, but what went to make his wooing of East Hull a success was his winning personality and his genial, sociable bearing. He gave, when any object appealed to him, with a broad-minded generosity. It did not matter whether the object was Church of England or Nonconformist, or whether the promoters of it were Conservative or Liberal. That was of small moment; but he gave a huge amount if the object appealed to him. Sir Thomas's affable bearing in the streets of working-class East Hull and his warm, genial, and genuine handshake won him many friends, who were sorry when he retired from the political arena. He had the interest of East Hull, no doubt, much at heart, and had circumstances permitted it is likely that he would have done much to carry into practical effect the policy which gained the title of "bread and butter politics," by which cry he won his last seat. A flag is flying at the East Hull Conservative Club as a tribute of respect.
