Sammie Nell Herdes, 88, of Olney, formerly of Clay City, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Helia Healthcare of Olney.

Sammie was born on January 11, 1933 in Comanche, Oklahoma, the daughter of James Chester Abernathy and Nellie Wilmetta (Bailey).

Later she married Jack Herdes on June 23, 1949, and he preceded her in death on October 20, 2000.

Sammie enjoyed crocheting, reading Western novels, and in her younger years, she belonged to the Clay City Square Dancing Club. She had a strong faith and took pleasure in attending the First Baptist Church in Clay City.

Sammie is survived by her daughters, Vicki Hunley and husband Jim of Clarksville, TN, Suzanne Gordon and husband Richard of Olney, IL, and Jan Jenkins and husband Paul of Litchfield, IL. Also surviving are her 8 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James C. and Nellie Wilmetta Abernathy, husband, Jack, and daughter, Lori Nell.

A Funeral Service for Sammie will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 1, 2021 at Kistler Patterson Funeral Home in Clay City, with a visitation beginning one hour prior.

Interment will follow at Clay City Cemetery.
