On January 20, 2021 Ted passed away peacefully at the Highland Manor-Garden Court in Elko NV where he had been a resident for the past two years. His sister and family members were with him constantly for the final days of his life and were grateful to spend time with him. After 97 years of life his heart said it had been through enough and he peacefully passed away of congestive heart failure. The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the entire Highland Manor staff and nurses for the excellent care Ted received.
Ted was born December 20, 1923 in Fruita Colorado to Lewis and Viola Hansen Dahling. He was the oldest of four children, his siblings being Bernice, Betty Lou, and Wanda Lee.
Ted’s early life was spent living on ranches from Green River UT to Moab, UT. In 1929 the Depression hit the family hard and his Dad lost his livelihood. Ted’s Dad then moved the family back to their original home in Fruita Colorado where Ted attended school through the 8th grade.
At that time Ted, at only 14 years old, went to work on his uncle’s ranch in the Book Cliffs Mountains of Utah. After the Depression the family moved to the mining town of Lake City Colorado. In 1940 the family moved to Mercury UT where Ted then drove truck for the mine until Uncle Sam called him to war in 1943.
Ted proudly served in the 501st Regiment within the 101st Airborne in WWII until he was honorably discharged and received the American Theater of Operations Service Ribbon, the African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, and the German Occupational Medal in 1946 .
After returning home Ted then went to work at the Deseret Chemical Depot south of Tooele UT until they closed the civilian housing in 1947. His family then moved to Lehi UT. In 1948 he went to work for WW Clyde Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Ted worked all over Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada.
In 1970 Ted went to work for Carlin Gold and continued to do so until he retired in 1995. In his retirement he worked heavy equipment for ranches including Emerson Neff, Hooper Ranches, and Knudsen Construction.
Ted is proceeded in death by his grandparents who lived to be in their 90’s, his parents Lewis and Viola Hansen Dahling, sister Bernice Dahling, sister Betty Lou Beck, and daughter Diane Dahling Curry.
He is survived by his sister Wanda Krenka, his daughter Julie Brooks, his granddaughter Lacy Austin, many stepchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews, and many great great nieces and nephews, who brought him joy.
The family would like to thank Linda Brady at Cimarron Village Apartments, the Managers of KFC Elko, and Kerry Aguirre for her kindness during Ted’s time spent at the Senior Center. Ted will be missed by his best friend Ted Kelsey.
Services will be held on Friday January 29, 2021 at Burns Funeral Home. Public viewing will begin at 10 am with full military services to begin at 11 am. Grave dedication to immediately follow services at the Veterans Cemetery Elko.
