Capt. David Edward Crockett, one of the best known masters of Baltimore sailing vessels, died in the hospital at Jacksonville, Fla. at noon Wednesday. Comptroller Heffner received a dispatch the same afternoon announcing the death of Captain Crockett and after conferring with Mrs. Crockett, who resides here, instructed the authorities to forward the body to this city. Yesterday it was decided to have the body forwarded direct to Rockland, Maine, the birthplace of the deceased.
Captain Crockett was about 59 years old, and since taking command of vessels he had been in charge of 30 different barks and schooners. Out of this port he commanded the bark Gamallel, schooners Maggie E. Gray, Clytle, J.S. Hoskins, Katie J. Irelan, Blanche Hopkins, Susan B. Ray and the Edward G. Hight, of which latter he was master when he died. The Hight arrived in Philadelphia a few days ago. In charge of the mate, Captain Crockett being too ill to return in her. He leaves a widow and daughter, the latter the wife of Dr. W. J. Pillsbury, 2801 York Road.
