1925-2018
Barbara Kathryn Stackhouse Fitch ("Bobbie") passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2018. Bobbie was born in New Rochelle, NY on November 24, 1925. She spent her youth in NE Pennsylvania attending the Wyoming Seminary and Endicott College. At age 22, she moved to New York City and enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, later joining the Fred Astaire Dance company. In the exciting post-war years dance assignments led Bobbie to wonderful venues around the country including The Cloisters in Sea Island and eventually to the opening of the Shamrock Hotel in Houston in 1949.
It was here where she met another newly transplanted Houstonian, John C. Fitch (Jack), becoming her husband of 56 years until his death in 2006. The tragic loss of their first child at a young age influenced Bobbie's compassion for providing early support to those experiencing losses. She had a profound gratitude for the love and support her many dear friends and family provided throughout her life.
Bobbie had a deep interest in the arts, particularly art history. Travelling the world with friends, her life was enriched by her personal experience of great works of art and architecture. Bobbie's knowledge served her well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the MFA Houston.
Bobbie and Jack spent many summers on the coast of Maine where they hosted multitudes of friends and acquaintances of all ages. Her garden in Maine was renowned as was her skill as a gardener. She was an active member of the Town and Country Garden Club, thoroughly enjoyed the members and staff of the Bayou Club and was a proud member of the 1925 lunch group. In 1959 she and a group of friends founded The Dancers which thrives to this day.
She is survived by William S. Fitch (son) and wife Annie Castleberry of Houston, Texas; David D. Fitch (son) and wife Cindy B. Fitch of Houston; grandchildren Avery L. Fitch and John C. Fitch III. Bobbie's eldest son, John C. Fitch, Jr. and her husband, John C. Fitch preceded her in death.
The family would like to recognize Ernestine Reason for her deep devotion and service to Bobbie over the last several years of her life.
In lieu of customary remembrances memorial contributions may be sent to: Bo's Place, 10050 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, TX 77054 and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, PO 6826, Houston, Texas 77265-6826.
