She was born Feb. 26, 1925 to Sam and Ludia Sharp in Wayne. Lenore, her parents, sister Jackie and brother Ray lived and worked on a farm. When Lenore was very young the family moved to California and then on to Oregon during the Great Depression. After a few years out West, the Sharps moved back to the Wayne area to farm once again. Lenore did her share of farm chores, including chopping cotton.
As World War II broke out, Sam and Ludia moved the family to Oklahoma City, where they worked at Douglas Aircraft. Lenore attended Capital Hill High School, graduating in 1944. The next year she met the love of her life, Frederic Leon Stalcup. They met on a double date after Leon returned from the war in Europe as an Army sergeant. Destined to be together and raise a family, they married in 1945 in Oklahoma City.
After their son Larry was born in 1949, they moved from Oklahoma City to Ft. Sill in Lawton, Okla. where Leon was called back into the Army reserves during the Korean War. They returned to Oklahoma City in the early 1950s, and celebrated the birth of a daughter, Janet. Lenore worked as a housewife, and began fine-tuning her skills as an excellent cook. In 1955, she and Leon welcomed another daughter, Debbie.
As the children grew up, Lenore served as a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie troop leader. The family loved to travel “down home” to Wayne and Paoli, where Lenore and Leon had close relatives and friends. More than once did she get onto Larry for throwing eggs at a barn, or taking a hatchet to one of Grandpa Sam’s trees. Janet and Debbie claim they never got into trouble. In 1964 Lenore and Leon moved to Paoli for a change of pace from the city. Lenore loved spending more time with her parents, brother and many nieces and nephews.
She and Leon operated a small grocery store. In 1967, Lenore took a part-time job at the Paoli post office. She became Paoli postmaster in 1971, the same year Leon died far too young. Strong willed and dedicated to her family, Lenore served as postmaster for the next 18 years and treasured visits from her children. While making sure the mail was delivered in the small town, she watched as her children brought their own kids into the world. And she proudly boasted that all three of her children earned their degrees from the University of Oklahoma.
She loved to travel with friends to postmaster conventions across the nation. In 1989, she found another travel companion, Harold Sherrod. Harold, a high school friend of Leon’s and a Paoli First Baptist Church member with Lenore, stepped deeper into her life. They were married the summer of 1989. Following a few years of bus tours (in which Lenore shook her head as Harold held court on the bus PA system), they focused more on high school and college graduations of their blended family’s grandkids.
The two enjoyed their easy life in Paoli before Harold died in 2006. Lenore remained in Paoli until 2007, when she moved to Norman to be closer to her daughters. Her patio home was ground zero for Christmas and other holiday celebrations. Her recipes for hundreds of dishes, including the to-die-for red velvet and Italian cream cakes and chocolate cream pie, were more than mouthwatering.
Lenore cherished her time with her children, grandchildren and great-grand children. Her grace was contagious. Even in her later years, she always dressed to a T. As she approached her final days, she let everyone know, “I’ve never gone this long without makeup.”
Lenore was also preceded in death by her parents, sister and son-in-law, Bob Dulin. Survivors include a son, Larry and wife Deborah of Amarillo, Tex.; two daughters, Janet Dulin of Norman and Debra Scott and husband Randy of Norman; brother Ray of Wayne, grandchildren Dr. Dane Stalcup of New York City, Andrea Johnson and husband Jeff of Norman, Michael Dulin and wife Kelsey of Edmond, Natalie Trease and husband Chad of Norman, Travis Norman and wife Megan Phelan of Norman, Bradley Scott and wife Laney of Ft. Smith, Ark. and Wesley Scott of Norman, and nine great-grandchildren. Also, step-children Sandi Carter and husband Roland of Benbrook, Tex., Janie McQuigg and husband Clark of Miami, Okla., David Sherrod and wife Jeannie of Palestine, Tex. and Ray Sherrod and wife Mary of Tom Ball, Tex., step-grandchildren Dale and Matt Sherrod, both of Tampa, Fla., Chris Barnhart of Cape Coral, Fla., Alicia Moran and husband Ben of Palestine, Jason Carter and wife Ashley of Bend, Ore., Cheyenne Carter of Winston Salem, N.C, Addison and Bear McQuigg of Los Angeles, Megan Frazier husband David of Miami and Carter McQuigg and wife Stefani of Tulsa, and 10 great grandchildren
