Joe Boyd Burgess, 88, of Spartanburg, SC died Sunday, January 24, 2021.

Born May 6, 1932, in Gaston County, NC. son of the late John Milton Burgess and Doris Kate Reid Burgess; and husband of the late Sarah Jane Cannon Burgess.

A U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict, a 1952 graduate of Spartanburg High School and attended Clemson University, and a retired Tool & Dye Designer with Square D and IBM.

An avid golfer and historian, he worked on the Reid family genealogy and updated a pamphlet about the history of Mt. Dearborn Arsenal in Chester, SC. Mr. Burgess was a follower of the Messiah of Israel-Yeshua the Christ and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He loved sweets!

Survivors include his daughters, Beth Burgess Drennen (Lowry) and Laurie Burgess, sons, John Burgess (Gina) and Robert Burgess (Pam); eight grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and siblings, John M. Burgess, Lynda Burgess Salditt, and Raymond Burgess.

Predeceased by siblings, William Mack Burgess (18 Oct 1935 – 5 Sep 1999) and Sara Ann Burgess Romney (20 Jan 1942 – 24 Sep 2017).

Graveside services were 3:00 PM, Thursday, January 28, 2021, in West Oakwood Cemetery, Spartanburg, SC, conducted by Mr. Lowry Drennen.

Visitation was held at the graveside following the service.

Memorials could be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, SC.
