Obituary from The Daily Mining Gazette for May 2002

LAURIUM — Peter “Pete” Baudino, 98, well-known businessman of Calumet, passed away Monday, May 20, 2002, at his residence in Laurium. He was born September 13, 1903 in Calumet, a son of George and Mary Baudino.

He attended the local schools of the area and was a graduate of Calumet High School, Class of 1923. Peter was active in community and civic affairs. He was captain and was involved with the organization of the first high school hockey team in 1921 and had been a faithful fan, attending the local games.

He organized the Company “A” Engineers Michigan State Militia in 1941 and served as its Captain until 1946. By the organization of the Militia, this allowed the purchase of the present Armory by the State of Michigan.

He worked for Carlton Hardware in Calumet from 1933 to 1950 when he and his wife, Eleanor, and son, George “Bud”, purchased the former Keckonen Hardware which later became known as Ace Hardware of Calumet. The hardware store has been a family business and is presently operated by Pete’s granddaughter, Pat and her husband, Rodney. Until recently, you would still see Pete, affectionately known as “Uncle Pete,” greeting and helping in the store.

Pete was past president of the Calumet Chamber of Commerce from 1964 to 1966 and became the first president of the newly organized CLK Chamber of Commerce. He was a past president of the Michigan Retail Hardware Association in 1963 and because of his activities in the organization, Gov. George Romney appointed Pete as a Michigan Minute Man.

He served as a Commissioner from 1971 to 1974 on the Houghton County Board of Commissioners and served on various committees. He helped to organize Coppertown, USA and was vice-president; served as president of the Italian Mutual Insurance Company; was on the Board of Directors of the Miscowaubik Club; a life member of the Calumet Knights of Columbus, 1245; Calumet Elks Club, BPOE 404, and a member of Sacred Heart Church of Calumet.

He married Eleanor Viani on July 10, 1926 in St. Mary’s Church in Calumet and she preceded him in death on January 14, 1986. Also preceding him in death were his parents; four sisters; and a brother. He is survived by a son, George “Bud” (Jan) of Hancock Canal; two granddaughters, Pat (Rodney) Mishica of Calumet, Sue (Peter) Cloutier of Seattle, Wash.; five great-grandchildren, Casey LeVeque, Abbey Mishica, Ashley Mishica, Chase Cloutier, Evan Cloutier; special niece, Pat Carlton (Ed) Chopp; other nieces and nephews include Merlin (Merle) Baudino, Alvin Baudino, Raymond (Sally) Baudino, Mary K. (Bob) Masnado, Bob (Peg) Carlton, and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday morning at Sacred Heart Church in Calumet by Fr. Wayne Marcotte. Interment will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Erickson Crowley Funeral Home in Calumet. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be made to one’s favorite charity in Pete’s memory.
