U.S. Naturalization Services records show a naturalization date of November 2, 1848; Charles resided in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana at that time. Census records for 1850 list Charles and his wife Philippea as residents of New Orleans Municipality 3, Ward 1; Charles worked in a milliner shop. They moved to Missouri sometime before the birth of their eldest son, Fritz, as the 1870 US census lists Missouri as the birthplace for both Fritz (b. 1858) and his younger brother George (b. 1861).
