Bertha A. Albert, 90, of Hamburg, a resident at Laurel Center passed away of natural causes on January 20, 2021. Married in 1949, she was the wife of the late Wm. J. Albert, who passed away October 30, 1998.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Carl W. and Bertha S. (Sweigart) Altenderfer. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamburg. She graduated from Reading High School in 1948. Bertha and her husband ran two businesses in Hamburg: Wm. J. Albert Firefighting Equipment and Service, and Wm. J. Albert Warehouse, Storage, and Supply. Lifetime hobbies included: singing, sewing, and traveling.

Bertha was an active member of St John’s and enjoyed being a choir member since moving to Hamburg; she also participated in the women’s quilting. Prior to St John’s, she was a member of St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Reading and a member of the choir there until June 13, 1976.
Bertha was also a member of: Union Fire Co #1 of Hamburg, Central Berks Fire Co, Women of the Moose Chapter 786, Senior Citizens of Hamburg, Berks Encore, and formerly a member of the Hawk Mountain Region early Ford V8 Club of America (at one time serving as Treasurer), Junior Women’s Club of Hamburg, and the Reading Stamp Collectors Club of America.

Bertha is survived by her loving family, two daughters: Debra J. (Albert) wife of Harry J. Clark, Manassas, VA, and Danette A.E. (Albert) wife of Greg Steffish, West Chester, PA; and four grandchildren: Christine Clark, Washington, D.C., Michelle Clark, Death Valley, CA, Kyle Steffish and Wyatt Steffish, both of Lancaster. She was predeceased by a son: David W. Albert, two brothers: Carl and Harold Altenderfer, and a sister, Dorothy (Altenderfer) Kauffman.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Laurel Center of Hamburg for the wonderful and personal care they provided their mother. Mom always said, “they take good care of me here”. Bertha moved to the Laurel Assisted Living Center in May 2016, and moved to the Nursing Side in November, 2020.
