He was the brother of Joseph Yates and Adam Yates.
Thomas and his two brothers, Joseph and Adam,left Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia in 1847 by flat boat and came to Peoria Illinois by way of the Ohio, Mississipi and Illinois rivers. They settled together in the northeastern corner of Radnor county, Peoria County, Illinois. There was a Yates family cemetery but records show that the land was sold and living family gave consent to have the cemetery farmed.
