CAT'S NOTES :
First Lieutenant Robert E. Lee was stationed at Ft. Monroe, Virginia from 1831 to 1834. Captain Dana was there from 1828 to 1832, so Lee was under Dana during the period 1831-32, in which lee was an engineer on the project .

CAPTAIN DANA was stationed at Fort Monroe in 1827 where the Army was engaged in the construction of additions to the fort. A seaman named Edmund Dobson arrived at the fort and told CAPTAIN DANA of a ship, the brig " Crawford" in port that had been seized on the ocean and was currently held by pirates , including the notorious pirate Alexander Tardy, and three others who had murdered eight of the eleven passengers and crew on board. CAPTAIN DANA immediately sent nine soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Robert Anderson , and they arrested the three pirate crewmen , Tandy having slit his throat to evade capture. The three pirates were later tried by Chief Justice John Marshall, and hanged.
