Jean was born May 13, 1944, at Grand Island to Gene and Laurine (Johnson) Adams, her father died serving his country in WWII, when she was an infant. Her mother married Robert Bell, and he adopted her at the age of two.
She grew up in Giltner and graduated from Giltner Public schools in 1962. She then attended Kearney State College. Jean married Lloyd Straatmann on March 10, 1963, together they had four children, Bob, Brenda, Rochelle and Brent.
Jean worked as a ward clerk for many years at Memorial Hospital in Aurora. She moved to Autumn Park Apartments in Hastings when her health began to fail, where she resided until her death.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gene Adams, stepfather, Robert Bell, daughters, Brenda Fowler and Rochelle Straatmann, daughter-in-law, Chris Straatmann, and grandson, Brandon Fowler.
Survivors include her mother, Laurine Bell of Giltner; two sons, Bob Straatmann of Hastings and Brent Straatmann of Central City; grandchildren, Jana (Steven) Connot of Hastings, Brady (Stoney) Straatmann of Hastings, Brittany Fowler of Lincoln, Nathan Fowler of Grand Island, Jeremy Straatmann serving with the U. S. Navy in Great Lakes, Ill. and a great-grandson, Blake Connot; a brother and sister-in-law, Dave Nancy Bell of Piedmont S.D.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Steve Hosier of Giltner.
