Sidney Sherrill Alderman, 80, of Tours, france, formerly of Greensboro, died yesterday at a nursing home at Tours, France after an extended illness. Mr. Alderman had lived in France since the early 60's following his retirement as vice president of Southern Railroad.

He had served with Southern Railroad since 1930 - first as general counsel and then as vice president. Mr. Alderman, a graduate of Trinity College (now Duke University) and the law school, was a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney General in 1945 and 1946. He was assigned to assist in the prosecution of major European Axis War Criminals.

Mr. Alderman received his law degree in 1916 and then attended Sorbonne University in Paris, were he graduated in 1919. He married Marguerite Steck, the daught of a French army colonel.

He returned to Greensboro after the war and began a law practice with the late Judge W.P. Bynum. He practiced law for about seven years before joining Southern Railway.

In World War 1 he served in Verdun, Voages, and in Meuse-Argonne. His war decorations include the Order of White Lion Class V (Czechoslovakia), and the Order of Legion of Honor (France).

He was a trustee of Duke, a member of the American and North Carolina Bar Associations, and he attended the Episcopal Church. His father was the founder of Alderman Studios of High Point.

Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Francoise Genevieve Schneider of California; son, Sidney S. Alderman of San Francisco; and sisters, Mrs. Sidney A. Gayle Sr. and Miss Sarah Alderman, both of High Point.
