Orpheus was born to a mixed race couple and because of his light skin tone, he was able to pass himself off as being white. When he married Ida Gould in 1924 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania she was a wealthy white woman. They had one son born of this marriage, James Gould Fisher who was born in 1925. Orpheus and Ida divorced.

Married second Marian Anderson in July 24, 1943 in Bethel, Connecticut. Marian Anderson was a famous contralto who had worldwide fame and was refused the privilege of singing in the DAR Constitution Hall because of its policy that only white entertainers were allowed. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, dropped her membership over this issue. On Easter Sunday in 1939, at the request of President Franklin Roosevelt, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. at its dedication. Aa four-decade career, Marian retired in 1965.

Orpheus and Marian were long time sweethearts. She refused his original marriage proposal in order to pursue her singing career and after his divorce from Ida, the two were reunited in marriage and lived out their remaining lives together. They had no children.

Orpheus and Marian grew up in Philadelphia and while Marian pursued her musical career, he pursued a career as an architect. They bought a 100-acre farm in Connecticut where they lived out their lives together.
